Rockin' the Bulb

I was invited to play in the Jacob Green Charity Golf Tournament. We raised a lot of money for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. As usual, Jacob gathered dozens of his sports celebrity friends to come out and play, and the turnout was impressive.

Emcee Steve Raible introduces the celebrities (I'm not one of them, by the way). Jacob Green is adjusting his shoes in the foreground. In front of Raible, you can see former Husky Coach Don James, and former Charger star Rod Bernstine.

One of the greatest athletes of our generation. And Seahawk Legend and NFL Hall of Famer Steve Largent.
Steve's shirt is kinda freaking me out here. It's undulating.
You can't tell from this picture, but my buddy Murray was really excited to meet Largent.
He says, "Steve, remember that playoff game when you caught that touchdown pass in the end zone against Denver, and you completely burned Louis Wright in the corner of the end zone and Zorn hit you right in stride?"
"Ummm. Yes?"
"That was awesome."
I completely stunk the place up. I hadn't picked up a golf club in over a year, and it showed. People say, "Oh, come on. You can't be that bad." Oh, but I am. Maybe it would help if I had sturdier clubs:

It's an optical illusion, but it looks like I'm playing with a steel noodle. I might as well be. My swing is technically sound, but I have no accuracy whatsoever.

My tee shot on the par-3 16th actually landed across the street from the hole.
The highlight of my day was reconnecting with Sonic Legend Slick Watts, who said that yes, he would teach me how to rock the bald head properly.
1.jpg)
Slick turned 58 years old on Wednesday. He's been bald for 50 years now. He had some patchy hair as a kid, and shaved it all off for the first time when he was eight years old. He says it was tough on him, at times, growing up in the 60's with a bald head.
"This was the era of James Brown, big afros, and 'black and proud', so it was hard going around in college with a shiny head", Slick says, but with his abundant confidence, charm and basketball skill, Slick learned to like the fact that he stood out.

Slick as a Sonic in the early 1970's.
His given name is Donald (Just like his son Donald, the former Husky basketball star), but he earned his nickname from a nun at Xavier University in New Orleans who used the term to describe his game--not necessarily his head.
Over the past five decades, Slick says he has learned quite a few tricks about how to rock the bulb. He says cocoa butter has been his standby for keeping the dome soft and supple. He says he used hair remover on his head for many years (such as Neet or Nair), and would then shave the stray hairs off with a butter knife.

In my case, he suggested that I get a little bit of sun on my cue ball head, but not too much. "Sunscreen is your friend", he says. He also strongly recommends a sharp razor and even sharper threads:
"The best thing is to wear a really nice suit, a white suit, or a black suit, or pink...ooh boy!" Slick says, "and then get that head all shined up. That's the way to look."
I'm going to give it a shot tonight on Q13 FOX News. I'll be anchoring the news for the first time with a bald head. I've got my black-pinstriped suit and pink tie ready to go. I hope Slick approves.

Dude. Seriously. HOW did you even do this after all you've been through in the past week???
Holy crap.
You and Slick look tremendous!
