My Bald Head

I kinda like my bald head.

I just shaved it clean for the first time.  I look like a different person.  I feel different, too.  When I rub my hands on my head, it feels like petting a lizard.  It burns in a really strange way when you slap aftershave on it.  I went for a run this morning, and enjoyed the feeling of the sunshine on my bald head, glistening with sweat.  It still has a definite fresh-shaven, cueball quality to it right now, but I'm planning on getting a little bit of sun over the next few days.  (I know--SPF!!)

Catherine and I are heading to Hawaii for a couple of days, just for a change of scenery.  We're going by ourselves. It's been a pretty trying couple of months for us, so we could use a mini-vacation.

Will is heading down to California for a week of summer camp with his cousin (still checking for lice, after last week's debacle), and Gigi will stay with Nana and help out with her "hat shows".  My mom makes original hats and clothing out of chenille, and sells them at local markets like Redmond, Kirkland, and Fremont.  Gigi loves to help out, and this summer, she's even made a few sales for Nana, earning five dollars a day.  So, the kids will have a great time while we're away.

I was asked to deliver a keynote speech for the Jacob GreenDinner and Auction at The Westin on Thursday night, which benefits the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, but I will just be getting back into town, so I taped a message that will be played during the event.  I'll come out to Harbour Pointe Golf Club on Friday morning to take part in Jacob's Celebrity Golf event.  I'll be the guy pulling up divots the size of area rugs.  It's going to be ugly.  I haven't picked up a golf club in over a year.  So, if you get stuck on my team, I apologize in advance.

Bill - I was born in Hawai - my mother was born/raised there. She met my father there - he was stationed at Hickom field. Both are Pearl Harbor survivors. We still have family there. I have friends living there. My mother and I visited in 1998. We left in 1942 - only 2 hotels at Waikiki then. What a change!

Might I recommend a nice oil free lotion instead of aftershave. Your hair may continue to grow in a limited fashion and I would hate to see you get in-grown hairs on your head from the alcohol in the aftershave. You probably will still get the in-growns to some extent, but they can be limited with the use of lotion by keeping the scalp soft. Sorry, I should have mentioned this before. Enjoy your break with Catherine. I am glad you took peoples advice and headed out of town. You needed to go where no one knows you other than a tourist on vacation. Anonymity has its advantages. God Bless and enjoy.

    Hey Bill and Catherine,
Hope your enjoying Hawaii. I just heard from someone at the West Seattle Summer Fest about your cancer. Goggled you and found out it is Hodgkin's. That is what my Mom had at 62 and they said the same thing to her that that it's a "good cancer" if you have to get one and most people get it at a younger age! The hardest part or one of he hardest was losing her hair and not losing any weight after having all that chemo. All those steroids just kept her puffy.
Want you to know you are in our prays for a complete recovery and remission.
It was good to see the kids. Time flies. Sam and Allie have a girl, Isabella who's 26 months. I have Mondays off so I get to watch her then. She's great.
Enjoy your time in Hawaii and use lots of sunscreen.

I saw you on the news this evening with your new look. I've known about you and your story, having been a faithful viewer of Q13 for years. Cancer has touched my family too. Thank you for sharing your story. You are so brave, courageous, strong, and beautiful even without your great hair! Keep it up, Bill.

Haole. Though I liked the phonetic spelling. It might fit more with what you felt like at the time.

Hi Bill -- I think you actually look SO MUCH BETTER without your hair. Absolutely no offense meant at all, but I always thought your old hairstyle resembled that of a 1980's game show host.

Your new look is awesome. I'd keep it that way even after your treatments are over. Sending you my best thoughts.

I do not know if I could ever be in front of all of us while going through this.

We loved watching you on Saturday Night.
